ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN I

CONTEXTUAL FIT

PROJECT OUTLINE:

The Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new addition should have its own presence.

CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS:

NARRATIVE:

A newly wedded couple have just bought the house and would like to make an addition so the house fits their most needs. The husband is a major engineer and the wife works in communications, both being athletic and active as well as doing outdoor hikes and activities. The couple has a 3 year old Gold Retriever as their companion. Without having any kids yet, they’d like to make this house their dream home while they can without the responsibility of kids. Both working full time, they want their Exercise Room to be the most important thing to them, allowing them to be able to exercise at any time convenient for them. Following, they enjoy their formal outdoor area as well, and want a nice Master Bath to suite their needs. Loving the outdoors, they want to spend most of their time entertaining out there, as well as enjoying the view of the Long Island Sound.
